help i have recently got myself a 160gb hard drive to put into my computer.
the hard drive did not come with any disks or wire connections. i havent got
a clue how to install it. ie what wires i need ( i have got an old pc which i
could dismantle) or which wires go where or even if you need any disks ?
software can you help me thanks.........

Read the name of the hard drive maker on the label. You
need to have the correct type of cable. A year or two ago,
an 80 wire/40 pin connector IDE cable was what you needed,
now it is possible you have an serial ATA hard drive. The
label on the drive will say; either IDE or SATA.
If you have bought a SATA drive you will likely have to buy
a PCI card with serial ATA controllers. SATA cables are
smaller in size and not interchangeable with the ATA/IDE
connector.

The maker's web site will have instructions. You can find
generic instructions by Googling for "install hard drive" or
looking on magazine web sites, such as www.pcworld.com

My advice is radically different. The OP has no idea what they are
doing. I recommend they take it to a shop, eat the bench fee and
watch the tech do the install. Most smaller shops will allow owners
back in the work area and the techs are usually happy to answer
questions. A happy customer is one that keeps coming back when they
need something instead of heading over the Best Buy.

Another approach - as Jim said, read manufacturer from Disk drive, get
Model number on disk drive - go to manufacturer's web site, select the
support link, and locate "Installation Manual" for said Model number -
download and/or print - read on what controller, cable (controller and
power) connections are required 40 or 80/40, SATA ,etc. Read how to set
drive jumpers, master, slave, cable select etc.
Then the OP if still confused or believes above his/her ability, should
take NobodyMan's suggestion - have it done by someone who knows, ask to
watch, ask questions.
It is possible OP has an older PC with only IDE connections, but has
purchased a SATA or SCSI drive off e-bay, which just won't work. An IDE
80/40 will work on an old IDE 40 controller, just anything greater than DMA
2 or 3, will be disabled.
