Hard drive going bad?

My system has 8 hard drives, most internal ata and a few external usb2
drives.

Problem is when I open windows explorer and try to copy a file from one hd
to another, windows falls to a blank desktop, slowly loading the icons and
operation normal. The computer works fine otherwise, using xp pro sp1.

any ideas what is causing this problem?
