Hard drive full

I am trying to clean up my C drive in order to defrag it.
However, out of this 14 Gig partition I can only free up 937 Meg.

I only have Windows and my antivirus/spyware on that partition.
When I calculate the space used by each folder in the root, I come-up to 8.2
G (not the 13.7G I get by the C/propreties).

I do have the hidden files and folders option checked to reveal them.

I did do a complete C drive cleanup. My intenet temp files is cleared and
limited to 10 Meg, my system restore is turned off.

Somehow, I suspect system restore to be hiding some old files from me but I
am open to any creative suggestion.

Also, XP pro SP2 is taking 4.07 Gig all by itself. Is this normal?

you can download and install a utility called JDiskReport which will tell
you what's going on with your disk space.
I found it very helpful.
If System restore is turned off, then it can't hide files, once it's turned
off, the points are purged, and anything in those points is purged as well.
Have you tried defragging?

Did WindowsXP come already installed on your computer?
XP only takes up 1.7gb when 1st installed.
Is your hard drive formatted NTFS or FAT32 ?
You can always reinstall XP to a clean hard drive.

I did a clean install last May and have installed all the updates, so I am
not that surprised with 4 Gig for Windows, but was just wondering.

I have a similar problem. A month ago, I had to do a reformat reinstall.
Since then, I have not downloaded any video or audio files to speak of. I
basically have nothing on my hard drive yet.

When I right properties for the C: drive, it shows me that 12 gigs are taken
up. BEFORE I did this reformat reinstall, I had tons of videos and tons of
music...and it never did take up 12 gigs. Now when I right click on each of
the directories contained within C:drive, and added them up...they total
about 5 gigs.

I recently posted this concern on this newsgroup, and was basically berated
by two MVP's who assumed I had not chosen to 'show hidden files and
folders', and they assumed I had not 'unchecked' the box to 'hide protected
operating system files'. They were wrong on both counts. So basically, I
got no help from those two MVP's on that particular question, just ridicule.

Any serious suggestions would be greatly appreciated by both Steph and
myself.

Best Regards,
Danno

Yes, that utility is kinda neet. But I'd love to find some sort of utility
that can tell me what is taking up (wasting) all the space that is not my
stuff. I have 40 gig hard drive. A fresh install...and 13 gigs of space
are taken up...and I have absolutely nothing downloaded yet. A year ago, I
had hundreds of tunes and videos and didn't approach 13 gigs of space used
up.

Steph & Danno,
If you go into System Restore on the left side settings,
You can reduce the number of Restore days by sliding the bar down to 7
percent or less.
You only need a couple of Restore days.
And turn off monitoring on all drives except C:
