Why is it that on the defrag window it says my free space is 14.978 GBytes. But on the explorer ( drive properties), it only says 14.5 GBytes. Is this normal? What can I do?
Thanx,

It's probably the difference between one application considering 1k=1000
bytes, and the other 1k=1024 bytes. This is the sort of thing that
accountants love to worry about. Are you an accountant?

K=1024 (plain ol' K - "more than k")
k=1000 (kilo)

Adds up. Newbie stuff, so if you missed that day, you
just don't get it. The units are different, and they
have different symbols. Use them. And if you still
don't see the difference, well, don't fret because few
ever will (care?).

I guess you're a fortunate one. The discrepancy on my machine is over 1GB
of space. It would appear that the Properties counts something as 'free
space' that Defrag does not count as 'free space'.

Such elements as recycle bin and unused MFT reserve space might account
for this.

That's what I was thinking as well, but I have just over 3GB in my Recycle
Bin. I'm sure it is something like that, though.

Thanks. now I know. I'm not an accountant but I'm very observant and likes to ask questions (??stupid ones??)
