Good Day everyone, for the past few days I have been getting the following
message on my computer

WARNING FAILURE IMMINENT. immeadiately back up your data and replace your
hard disk drive a failure may be imminent.

My question is as follow, I originaly purchased my computer with window 98
installed on it than I upgraded it to window XP, if I replace my hard drive,
do I have to install windows 98 update it with XP then go to the microsoft
site to get all the upgrade my computers have been getting for years?

I would appreciate your input

You can use the Win98 CD as a proof source when you boot from the XP CD and
start the install procedure. (During the install a window will open telling
you to insert the 98CD so an upgrade can be verified.)

Go here: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and download the
latest AutoPatcher for XP (incuding Full and updates). Install it and let it
search your system; you will then be presented with a long list of
updates/fixes/patches/etc.

The way you said that made me think you do not have a 98 CD......and
therefore will be unable to load the upgrade edition of XP.
Unless you can borrow a 98 from friend...can You??
there is a program called Acronis True Image....which when used( it needs to
be bought) can clone your old HD to the new HD.
Some new HD come with free Cloning Software...or the software is available
for free from the manufacturer's website...providing that your old HD holds
up for that long.

Don't recall SMART being available in the bios back when 98 was around.
SMART in the bios is what's presenting the message you mention. Do what it
says.
