I have trouble recovering my system. It is a windows xp service pack 2. I
have a dual boot hard drive ( i think) meaning i have two options each time i
turn on my laptop: load windows xp or do a full system recovery (if i do that
i my harddrive will be like brand new fresh from the factory).

well i tried doing the full system recovery, however when i do that i get a
blue screen of death saying that windows detected a problem and shut itself
down. Recommends that I scan for viruses (i did - spyware nothing else),
check for disk errors ( i did - came out fine) or check hard drive
configurations (i did - thus my question )

I went to device manager, devices, clicked on my hard drive and under
properties the optiion that says "device usage" is grayed out. Also it does
not say if it is enabled or disabled it's just blank( i assume enabled or
else i could not get into windows).

how do i fix that? and will it fix my problem.

I also tried to install a windows xp from a cd. I attempted to do a windows
recovery and a full installation, both failled because it could not find a
hard drive...hm wierd.

any help much appreciated. thx

This is a hardware problem and applying software solutions such as
reinstalling Windows will not help. The hard drive has failed and/or the
motherboard connector for the hard drive has failed. You can test by
putting in another laptop drive. If it is seen in the BIOS, then you can
just replace the hard drive. If a known-working drive isn't seen, then the
motherboard is damaged. To test the hard drive in that case, you would
attach it to a working system. As you can see, this is probably not
something you are going to be able to do yourself unless you have extra
laptop drives, computers, other equipment, etc.

Also, because you have a laptop with the factory restore image on the hard
drive, if you just put in a new hard drive you won't have an operating
system to install. You would have to buy one. The best course of action for
you is to call the laptop mftr.'s tech support for repair/replacement.
