hard drive crash

I was on my computer last night and it all of a sudden
turned itself off. When trying to restart I got the error
message:
We apologize for the the inconvenience, but Windows did
not start successfully. A recent hardware or software
change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted
unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect
your files and folders, choose Last Known Good
Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that
worked.

If the previous startup attempt was interrupted due to
power failure or because the Power or Reset button was
pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem,
choose Start Windows Normally

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Cinfiguration (your most recent settings
that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow to hi8ghlight your choice.

Seconds until Windows starts:

I know this is long but I have highlighted and hit every
option to no avail, the computer only reboots itself with
the same message. I would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks

I've had just the same happen to me on 15/06/04 it also
happened 2 wks or so after buying the PC 18 mths ago, then
i had to re install XP. Luckily i only had to lost a small
amount of work, but i can't afford to loose it all now.
I've been told the XP intalation disc has a repair option
on it but as yet i can't get it to 'see' the CD. Have you
had any luck finding a fix as yet?
