You can do individual files, directories, partitions or
entire hard drives with Eraser. Installation will ad a
selection to the context menu. It is configurable to use
higher or lower security file destruction. Once you use it,
the file or whatever is overwritten and not recoverable. It
is GNU licensed - donations are welcome. It is the simplest
to use, handiest and, least intrusive of any I have tried.
If you are replacing a hard drive and intend to pass it on
to someone else, this is the only way to go as the data can
be recovered if it is not overwritten. I believe there is
another - and probably several others - called wipe that
will destroy data on a hard drive. You need to know that
deleting the MBR or partition table or the file allocation
table will not prevent data recovery unless it is
overwritten.
