Hard drive backup - NTFS/Win2k

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a way or the best way to backup a NTFS drive. I'm
backing up a mates computer (his entire hdd) and I want to take an exact
snapshot effectively and drop it onto a folder on my drive. I used to use
"xcopy32 /r/i/c/k/e/y/s/h" under win98 but im not sure this is sufficient
for nfts/win2k.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Jimmy.

I use Norton Ghost, or the equivalent. Make sure you have the correct issue
for the operating system you want to back up. It is best to use a second
hard drive for the image, or you can have it back up the image to CD disks.

I use Xcopy /h/e/r with WinNT to backup partitions. File permissions are lost with WinNT workstation (permissions revert to the destination directory permissions), so after restoring I must manually set permissions. With some versions e.g. server versions the permissions are not lost so long as the files are always copied to NTFS partitions.

You are on the right track. Look into xxcopy, which is more
capable and is free. <http://xxcopy.com>. Don't forget its
manual. Things with NTFS drives are likely to make some file
uncopyable, especially system files.

The above methods may\will with some limitiations and are free but may not
clone to your satisfaction., however clone utilities exist (some better than
others). I might suggest Casper, Acronis, and Ghost 2003 or beter. Listed in
order of prefferance, want to try them, contact me?
