hard drive activity at Log On screen

When I turn on my computer and let it boot and let it get to the Log On
screen I notice that even after it's been sitting at the Log On screen for a
few minutes there is still hard drive activity. Is that indexing going on?
(I'm using vista home premium 64 - I have not made an changes to the default
for search indexing which I assume is on.)

Caching, Superfetch, Services and programs booting up, indexing... Take your
pick. ;-) The nice thing is, you do not have to wait for all this to finish
before you can log on.
