Hard disk self test failing

Hi

My Maxtor hard drive is failing the drive self test in the SeaTools provided
by Seagate. Am I now better off backing up the drive and dumping it or is
there a way to salvage it such as using a disaster/repair utility?

What are some good tools to check the state of a drive?

Back up your data *now* and replace the hard drive. You've got an
excellent tool with SeaTools and if the hard drive is failing, you can
rely on that.

SeaTools is now the best diagnostic for all the Maxtor/Seagate
drives. Time to backup and dump the Maxtor drive ASAP!!!!

You are much better off replacing the drive now, before it fails completely.
There is no point in running software tools to check its state, since you
already know it is failing.

Failing drives have a limited, yet unknown, lifespan. Use that time to
recover the data, don't waste it confirming that it is failing.

250 gig drives are under $75 now, and repair services likely much more
expensive.

Back it up, mark it as failed, and destroy it.

"Ditto" what Malke said. After failing that test, the HD unfortunately can
*never* be trusted again.

A method of assessing a drive's condition is to look at the SMART
