Changing Hard disk

Hi Fadi,

Usually a new HD comes with cloning software. The following sites I'll list
are for HD diagnostics programs, but I'm confident you can find your way
around for a disk cloning app.

Quantum/Maxtor - PowerMax
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)
http://support.wdc.com/download/

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)
http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Seagate - SeaTools
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/

Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool
http://www.fcpa.com/download/hard-drives/

Samsung - Disk manager
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/utilities/shdiag.htm

Once again, these are HD diagnostic sites, but I think you should be able to
back up through them and find cloning software. If no luck there, try :

Hi All,

I just want to know if there is any possible way to make a copy of my system
from HDD to another one
cause my windows XP and all my programs installed on "C: " (7 GB) drive
which is giving me "Low disk space" every time
and I just have applications on it, and other file on another drives.
so I have now hard disk partitioned to single drive of (40 GB), can I use
DOS - or any other way - to copy files from first drive to the new one, then
change the new one to be the master while the first hard disk is slave, and
booting from the new hard disk.
I am familiar using FDisk and DOS commands.

Thanks in advance

Fadi
Probably the best program Symantec ever made.

Some disk manufacturer let you download a disk cloning tool.
It comes with a floppy disk that you use to boot up your PC
while both disks are installed.

A simple alternative goes like this:
1. Install the old disk as a secondary master on some other
WinXP/2000 PC.
2. Install the new disk as a secondary slave on that other
WinXP/2000 PC.
3. Run diskmgmt.msc via the Start / Run facility and partition
the new disk the way you like it.
4. While still in the Disk Management facility, mark the primary
partition of the new disk as active.
5. Start a Command Prompt.
6. Type this command:

xcopy /d /s /h /y /c /o /k e:\*.* f:\

where E: is the drive letter for the old disk and F: for the
new disk.

That's all! Your new disk will now contain everything that
the old disk contained.

Warning: After cloning, make sure to boot the machine into
Windows with just the new disk connected. Do NOT boot
into Windows with both the old and the cloned disk connected.
This warning applies for the first boot-up only.

Also: Fix up your PC clock and/or your time zone. You're posting

You will find several programs that will clone HDD to HDD, but
Norton Ghost is easy and user friendly IMHO.

Thanks all for your replies,
I think Norton Ghost is the easiest way, but is it work when I try to copy
from 7 GB to 40 GB?
cause I heard once that its makes some error in similar situations.

Dear Pegasus,
where can I download a free disk cloning tool ( both of drives are Seagate )
?
and what is best for me, disk cloning tool or the alternative way?

thanks for your support

Best regards

Fadi

Curt Christianson went to a lot of trouble to give you many
links to disk cloning tools. Check them out!

You need to decide for yourself what's best for you. Cloning
tools are easy to use but they cost money. My alternative
method requires you to swap disks around but it is free.
Your call!

"Fadi", the best cloning utility that I've used is
Casper XP - written expressly for the Windows XP
family of OSes. You can tell it to clone a single partition
or the entire hard drive, making a partition as large
as you want in the process. You can download a
FREE 30-day trial copy from
www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ .

As Pegasus mentioned, do not start up the clone
for the 1st time with the "parent" OS still visible to it.
Thereafter, the clone *can* be started up with its
"parent" visible to it, and it will consider its "parent"
as just another partition with a file structure that is
accessible to it. The easiest way to make a partition
invisible is to just disconnect the hard drive that it's on.

The easiest way to make the new clone boot if both
hard drives are connected is to put the clone hard drive
in the cable position with the same jumpering as the old
hard drive. Otherwise, you can re-adjust the hard drive
boot order in the BIOS to put the clone's hard drive
at the head of the hard drive boot order.

Symantec DID NOT CREATE ghost. They bought it.

Symantec bought Drive Image 7.1 which they then
renamed Ghost 9.0 . Previous utilities called "Ghost"
were created by Symantec.

Hi all,
first of all, thanks for your continues support.
ý
Pegasus, I did exactly what you tolled me to do yesterday,
before started, I format the 40 GB HD (new) to be NTFS like the old one.
every thing was ok and done successfully,
after that I connected ONLY the new HDD to my PC
but when i boot its giving me a message that "No operating system" or
something like that (I’m not sure).
ý
I tried to boot from WinXP CD and select "repair"
it was tolled me to select the windows and it was gives me "1: C:\Windows "
after that did "Fixboot" but no chance
its still giving me the same message.
ý
and Timothy, can I use Casper XP trial now, or its to late?ý
also the trial version leave the additional space unpartitioned, can i
partition it at later time?ý
ý ý
Thanks for help
ý ý
Best regards
