your message does not make it clear if you wish to
continue with this cloned disk or if you have chosen one
of the other suggested methods.

No. Ghost was not created by Symantec

Based on Symantec's past of buying other softwares, and incorporating such,
like MS does, you're probably right. This pattern became much more prolific
when Peter Norton retired from Symantec. The first version of Ghost had the
"Norton" name on it, as many Symantec products do now.

Here are the first three steps to resolve this issue:
1. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com, then run fdisk.exe so that
you can see if your boot partition is active.
2. While still running under this disk, type fdisk /mbr
in order to rewrite the Master Boot Record.
3. Format a floppy disk on some other WinXP/2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your WinXP CD to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy

Report the results here.

Sorry cause i asked for two things within the same post.
actually i used yours, but i were stacked with the message i mentioned,
so i asked if you have a solution for this, then there is no need to go back

Actually Peter Norton never retired from Symantec, because he never worked
there. Peter had his own company, Peter Norton Computing. In 1990, he sold
the company to Symantec, which as you say, continues to use his name on
several of their products.

If your original partition that contains the operating system is
still running OK, yes, you can install the trial version of Casper XP
and use it to make a clone. You can tell Casper XP to use all
the space on the new hard drive, or you can tell it to make a
new partition of the size you tell it on the unallocated space of
the new hard drive. In the latter case, the space left over can be
used in the future to make new partitions as you wish.

By the way, Casper XP does not have to run on the OS that
you are copying. It works just as well running on an OS that
is on a 3rd hard drive. In other words, if you are copying
a partition on HD0 to HD1, Casper XP can be running on the
OS on HD2.

Hi Pegasus,
the drive is active,
i did what you said exactly, but on step 2
2. While still running under this disk, type fdisk /mbr
in order to rewrite the Master Boot Record.
it was give me a msg "error: cant save original MBR, operation
unsuccessful."
and maybe its because the drive is NTFS,so i booted from WinXP CD and used
FixMBR and done successfully.

then after i finished all steps, its give me the following msg:
windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of the above file.

also i searched on the internet, and i found some articles in Microsoft but
i didn't found it helpful (i think), cause its talking about installing
problem.

Please advice
Thanks for your continues support

Let's concentrate on the floppy boot. In the file a:\boot.ini
you have two instances of "partition(1)". Change the number
"1" to "2" or "3".

The problem you mention is of a minor nature. However,
your message does not make it clear if you wish to
continue with this cloned disk or if you have chosen one
of the other suggested methods.

Hi all,
first of all, thanks for your continues support.
ý
Pegasus, I did exactly what you tolled me to do yesterday,
before started, I format the 40 GB HD (new) to be NTFS like the
old
one.
every thing was ok and done successfully,
after that I connected ONLY the new HDD to my PC
but when i boot its giving me a message that "No operating
system"
or
something like that (I'm not sure).
ý
I tried to boot from WinXP CD and select "repair"
it was tolled me to select the windows and it was gives me
"1:
C:\Windows
"
after that did "Fixboot" but no chance
its still giving me the same message.
ý

Casper XP - written expressly for the Windows XP
family of OSes. You can tell it to clone a single
partition
or the entire hard drive, making a partition as large
as you want in the process. You can download a
FREE 30-day trial copy from
www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ .

2. I'm sending from Jordan, and our weekend day is Friday,

It is Saturday night over here.
Any way,
i'll install the operating system and all my applications again,
i think it will take less of time.

Excellent idea! (even though it is much like buying
a new car when running out of petrol.)
