hard disk partitioning?

Hi all

i just installed XP pro on my PC
i didn't create a partition while installing

can i create a partition now? and what is the best way to do it?

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows XP installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8
(www.powerquest.com).

Otherwise, a "clean install" will be required.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition(s), then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

XP full installation creates a partition that is the maximum size of the
hard drive.

XP Upgrade installation uses the existing Windows partition and replaces the
base Windows files.

In Disk Management, if there an entry "Unallocated" (or something similar)
then you can create a new partition.

If not, the you can not create a partition with a partition already using
the disk space. You will need to buy Partition Magic (Powerquest) or
Partition Commander (VCom) so as to re-size/move partition after XP had
created the partition.

If you have a XP compatible version of PM, you can't get much better help
than the PM users guide available from the Start> All Programs> PowerQuest>
Documentation> PDF User Guide.

Give XP at least 10 gigs and custom install your applications to another
partition. XP will still put files in the Program Files even when the
application is located on another partition.

How about reading the help files/manuals that came with PM? It
doesn't matter what size HD you have, BTW.

Actually, you HAD to create a partition when you installed. It works
in this order:

1. Partition
2. Format
3. Put stuff on formatted partition

XP created and formatted the partition for you. Maybe that's the
confusion?
