hard disk not booting when in new machine

HI, kind of a long story, but here it goes. Had an e-machines computer
running Windows XP Pro, mother board crashed. There was some important data
in a folder for one of the User Accounts I had set up. Took out the hard
drive and put in another e-machines box I had.

System will not boot from the old hard drive; I have tried putting in as a
slave, putting in alone as the master, putting both in and switching which
slot I put them in, it wont work!! If I put them both in, having the old
drive as a slave, it will boot, it sees the new drive and calls it F: but I
cannot get to my old data. It gives me an error and says access is denied.

Shouldnt I just be able to put the old drive in a new box and have it boot??
am I missing something??

Here is what I need; either boot from the old drive so I can log on as the
correct user to get my data, or boot from new drive, but get past the user
permission problem to get to my data.

I have tried a lot of things, but wont list them all. At this point I will
try about anything!!

Thanks

All you need to do is take ownership of your files.

Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421] -

How Do I Get the Security tab in Folder Properties? -
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_security_tab.htm

Security Tab -

a. The drive must be NTFS
b. For XP Pro, in Folder Options>View uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing'.
That is the level used in Home, and for some strange reason is on by
default in Pro, too.
c. For XP Home, you must go into Safe Mode.
