Hard delete an Open Message

I know that you can select a message or messages in your inbox and do a
shift+delete to permanently delete a message and bypass deleted items. My
question is why you can't do that to a message you are reading. When you
have the message open and you do a shift+delete, it goes into deleted items.
Is there a way to permanently delete the message while you have it open?
Thanks for any suggestions you can give me!

You can't hard delete because the file is in use; you have it open.
