hard coded IP address

I had a client who set up a VPN on my laptop, and apparently used a hard coded
IP address. I was preparing to install SP2 and removed adware and spyware
using Lavasoft. When I rebooted, I could not get onto the Internet. I tried
doing an IPCONFIG /renew and got an error message. I have tried to use the
Obtain IP address and also Use The following IP address in the Internet
Protocol of the Local Area Network, but no success.

Does anybody know how you can hardcode an IP address and not allow any
overrides? I need to remove this so I can use my ISP.

Thanks...

1. Go to "Start," then click "Control Panel."
2. Click "Switch to Classic View" if you have the option.
3. Double-click "Network Connections."
4. Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties."
5. Highlight your "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button.
6. Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
7. If you have "Specify an IP address" selected, your IP is hardcoded and your internet
will not work properly. Change the setting to "Obtain an IP address automatically,"
click "OK" twice, then reboot your machine.

I tried the steps below, but was not successful. When I click on the IE icon,
the status bar at the bottome of the window displays "detecting network
settings", then it tries to connect to "www,msn.com" and 2 additional
messages are displayed. They display very quickly, and the only message I see
is something about a dnserror and it calls shdoclc.dll.

Should I try uninstalling the Local Area Network and reinstall. I think the
client chnaged or hardcoded some other commands. the gentlemen that did it is
no longer at the client site, so I have no way of knowing what he did to get
the VPN Client to work.
