Hangs on reboot after xp2

My Notebook is a Presario 727 ca, and purchased in 2001 with xp preinstalled
with 3 recovery cd's, when sp1 came out I dully installed it, and when sp2
came out I installed and no problems came out of it, so I made a cd copy of
the download for use later on. Last night I figured I needed a fresh install.
But I ended up with the same problem some of my friends got after a reinstall
with an sp2 cd they got from Microsoft. On theirs, their p.c. shuts down even
when they press restart. Mine hangs up on restart right after the first
microsft logo screen.
Downloading and installing the latest video card driver from compaq didn't
help...Help!!!!!

First, Thanks to everyone who replied. I tried the web site Rick sent me to
and found it didn't quite address my problem and I had already tried a few of
the fixes.
Carey provided me with a most enlightening response.....a phone number to
call..
Wen I called I found out It would cost me $35. U.S. an hour to speak to a
technician.
At that price, with no guaranty, I'll do what some of my friends have been
doing.
select "Turn Off" and restart manualy when the need arrises, and with the
money I save, I'll buy.......???

Microsoft will not charge you a penny if you tell the support
person you are having difficulty with SP2.
