Hangs at Desktop

Recently my system on startup is hanging at the desktop, just when the
programs in the systray should be loading. Generally, a reset, restart solves
the problem. Sometimes I have to restart twice. I am guessing that there is a
conflict with the startup programs. Is there a log file somewhere that will
show me what program might be the problem? If this is the problem, is there a
way to alter the program startup sequence?

I have done all the obvious stuff - virus scans, spyware/adware, cleaned out
temp stuff, etc. Two newly added programs - Norton SysWorks 2006, NAV 2006,
MSN Messenger 8.0 Beta.

You unknowingly hit it right on the head, Symantec Norton Systemworks 2005
and 2006 frequently interfere with Windows startup causing the system to
freeze while loading. Tray icons will frequently be incomplete. You can try
temporally removing all icons from the system startup folder (Start, All
Programs, Startup) to see if that makes a difference. If it does, then put
them back one by one and see which one makes the system freeze on startup.
If it is the Systemworks load problem, you can live with it by pushing the
reset switch on your system it doesn't seem to harm anything. The best
solution; remove Systemworks in its entirety and install NOD32 Antivirus
System. NOD32 is fantastic, it has extremely low overhead and doesn't slow
systems down (like Norton does), it checks everything for viruses just like
Norton Antivirus but it is so superior to Symantec products there is no real
comparison. You can buy NOD32 online right now download it and install it in
minutes - http://www.eset.com/ , and no I don't work for eset, but I hate
Symantec products to the point of anger.

If you want to hate Symantec products you're going to have to stand in a very
long line.
