Hanging on boot

My machine was working fine and had no problems until one time I switched it on and it hangs on a blank screen. I hadn't made any changes to the computer at all and creating boot disks and setup disks doesnt worka as it just hangs on a black screen. When I try to boot from any floppy or cd it just hangs. I put my win98 cd to boot from as I was getting desperate and it gave me the option of booting from the hard disk or cd and both produce the same result as booting normally, it just hangs.

Any help guys?

Hopefully somebody else may have a magic wand idea on how to fix this, but
from your explanation if you're not getting through post I would suspect HW
problems. However when you say it hangs at blank screen, a lot will depend
on how far into booting you actually get, and at what point it actually
hangs. Are you through post, getting the loading windows, after you enter
creds for logon, etc.

Let's start at the beginning. Reboot your machine and press the key that
gets you into the BIOS setup process. It's often the "Delete" key. What do
you see? Does the BIOS recognise your hard disk?
