Hang up at login screen, WinXP Home

Gene

Since installing the newest service patch i can not access
my computer anylonger. the machine hangs up at the login
screen and will not go past it. when i try to login it
loads personal settings and then immediately logs me out
and back to the screen. microsoft says there isn't
anything i can do about it but reinstall windows and loose
all data on the drive. any other suggestions? this is a
work computer and has some very valuable files on it that
we can't just throw away. this seems to be a serious
problem since the tech told me that within the last 2
weeks they have been getting many calls concerning this.
help!

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode?

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;[LN];315222

When you start the computer in Safe mode, Windows loads only the drivers and computer services that you need. You can use Safe mode
when you have to identify and resolve problems that are caused by faulty drivers, programs, or services that start automatically.

If the computer starts successfully in Safe mode but it does not start in normal mode, the computer may have a conflict with the hardware
settings or the resources. There may be incompatibilities with programs, services, or drivers, or there may be registry damage. In Safe
mode, you can disable or remove a program, service, or device driver that may prevent the computer from starting.

To troubleshoot startup problems in Safe mode, follow these steps:
Click Start , and then click Shut Down .
Click Restart , and then click OK .
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode , and then press ENTER.

Microsoft is sluggish in addressing this issue.
But, your data is not "lost" in the devasting sense of the word.
Here are three easy options:
1. Remove hard drive from your PC and install as additional (or Slave as
some people insist on calling it) hard drive in another PC. Your drive,
whether formatted FAT32 or NTFS will appear as just another accessible drive
letter. Your access to the drive will be independent of permissions that
were previously configured. Although, if you locally encrypted data files,
they're probably gone.
2. Use disk imaging software, such as Symantec Ghost to clone your hard
drive contents to a file. It could be stored on a network share. With
Symantec Ghost, there is a utility called Ghost Explorer which allows you to
browse the contents of this file. All of your PCs directories and files will
be available for recovery.
3. If you are bored, install a "Parallel Installation" of Windows XP. You
can research the term, but it's just fancy for this:
Run Windows XP setup (boot from the CD). Rather than installing Windows in
the default C:\Windows directory, install it to C:\Windows2 for example. You
can then boot up and your files from the old Windows XP installation will
still be accessible.

But bottomline, always maintain a verifiably good backup of your data files,
or just store them on a Network share by default..

Hope this helps.
