Hang up at Login Screen, WinXP Home

Windows XP home edition - when the computer boots and goes
to the login screen i can't go any further. when i click
to login it says loading settings then immediately logs me
out. microsoft can't help on this one and says i have to
reload windows, thus loosing everything on the system.
this is a work computer with valuable files on it. any
suggestions? i find it insane that there isn't some way to
bypass the login screen, a backdoor or something. i was
also told that this problem could have resulted when i
downloaded the new service patch 2 - so beware. they are
getting many calls on this.

I have a similar problem with XP Home Edition sp2, it has appeared only since
the sp2 update. In my case Windows hangs at the same spot when I try to
shutdown. Except I can press my off button and finially kill it. I had this
same problem the last time I installed sp2, so I eventually did a system
restore. Unfortunatley I thought I would try it again. You shouldn't have to
reload windows. THere is a way to do system restore before the windows logon
screen appears, but I don't remember how I found it. Good luck for us both.

have tried all options, including last known good
cofiguration and safe with command prompt. each time it
takes me back to the login screen and no further.
