Hang during clean installation

Ding a reformat of my sata hdd with xp and it seems to hang during the
installation process. As shown "Installin Windows" and below there is the
light indicator trhat says " Installing Devices" with SETup will complete in
apprx 34 min. I have tried many times and it seems to hangat thispoint. There
are no other devices besides ps2 kb/ps2 mouse/ graphic card and sound card o
the ASUS mobo. not forgettting a dvd rom to run the cd
Any idea what could be wrong... pls adv
