when i stara my computer i get a message saying the hal.dll file is missing
or corrupt. from reading other posts it seem's that i have to reinstall
windows. The disk i have that came with the computer is a return to factory
settings disk. If i install this disk and windows will it erase all the files
that were already on the computer?

You have Boot.INI trouble. Boot from CD, and start the Recovery Console

Use the command 'type C:\boot.ini' save the file for backup,

Identify your drives with the 'MAP' utility. Compare the entries in the boot.ini [operating system] block, with the results you see
from 'Map arc'.

At this point you may see a way to hack boot.ini. You might try various edits from backup.

The utilities 'bootcfg /rebuild', and 'fixboot' may help you do that.

Your Windows "return to factory settings disk" will probably not allow
you to boot to the Windows XP Recovery Console, as suggested by MVP
Mark L. Ferguson.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994 and download the boot
diskette images for your version of XP, create the diskettes, and boot
your computer with these. When it finishes booting and stops at the
A:\> prompt you will be in the Recovery Console and you can then use
the instructions from Mark.
