Re-boot issue

Computer was shut down correctly with no errors. Now switched on and the
following message has appeared:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

System disks not assisting.

If any key is touched systems trys to reboot but still shows message.

Is anyone able to assist?

I am not clear what you mean by this statement "System disks not
assisting". Obviously it depends on what you have tried using them to
do?

Hi Gerry

Inserted Reinstallation CD but all that comes on the screen is the same
message.

Inserting the CD won't do anything unless you first go into the BIOS
and change the boot to the CD before the hard drive.

How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. As a matter of fact, you have to access the
BIOS before Windows even starts to boot. One common way is to press
the Del key when you first power on, but that's not necessarily right
for your computer. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot;
there's often a message there telling you what to do. If not, check
your system documentation or check with your vendor.
