Hacker blocking Software

B

Burt Rosner

To Everyone,

Before I publish my site, I am asking if anyone knows of a
reliable hacker blocking software package, or if that is
not possible a reliable encryption package I can obtain.
Basically, I want to prevent, as much as possible, someone
going on my server and "stealing" data.

Thanks, in advance, for your response.

Hi Burt,

Are you not using the shared services of an ISP / WPP? If not, then you need
to start at the beginning and make sure that:

1. Buy Jim Buyens book on IIS servers -- Sorry I don't recall the name but
it is excellent.

2. Make sure you have a good Firewall in place.

3. Make sure that your data communications provider allows you to run a web
server on their network.

4. Re-read Jim Buyens book.

If you are, then they have read Jim Buyen book more than likely.

Find a good host that know how to manage their servers with
hardware/software firewalls. This would not be something that you would
install unless you plan to host your own site which is not recommend unless
you are Server OS, Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro are not server OS.

Assuming the "data" you don't want stolen is private,
don't put it on the server.
If by "data" you mean images and script that make
up you web site, it has to be "served" for the site to function.

If you mean "data" that only certain "privileged"
people can access, place the data in a password
protected folder or sub directory, and or create a password
protected zip file.

If you're worried about someone hacking into your site
and changing or defacing it, use a reliable, reputable host
and make your account password some totally random
string of mixed characters and numbers at least 12 characters long.

That said, at a recent "security symposium" they brought in a
well known 19 year old Chinese college computer student and gave her
a list of web sites / servers to "test." The hardest one to hack only took
her ten minutes.
