Guest Account & Network

Hi there,

All machines have XP Prof SP2 with latest updates, wireless connected with
each other through D-Link ADSL Router.

Must the Guest Account be activated to have access to each other's sharded
Documents Folder?

Deon

No. Not in Pro.

Thanx, Gordon.

Why do you think then does my Laptop prompts for a username & password when
trying to get access to the shared docs on my PC?

My PC doesn't prompt me for a username & password when trying to access my
Laptop's shared docs.

The settings on both machines are exactly the same.

When you are logged on to your laptop, is it the same username and password
as exists on your desktop? The two MUST be identical in every way, including
access rights.

Gordon,

I have no username or password setup on either machine.

Just for your info: We have a small family business and at work we have 3
machines, 2 x Laptops and one PC.

None of them has a username and password and we can access on another's
shared docs folder.

I am trying to do this at home as well, ons wireless.

This is what it says in XP's help and support:

"A guest account provides access to the computer for any user who does
not have a user account on the computer"

"You must have a computer administrator account on the computer to
turn on and turn off the guest account on the computer.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
Click Guest.
Do one of the following:
To turn on the guest account, click Turn On the Guest Account.
The guest account will be activated. Now, a user without a user
account on the computer can log on to the computer at the Welcome
screen.

To turn off the guest account, click Turn off the guest account.
The guest account will be deactivated. Now, users without a user
account on the computer will not be able to log on to the computer.

Notes

To open User Accounts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then
double-click User Accounts.
Users who log on to the computer using the guest account do not have
access to password-protected files, folders, and settings. "

This kind of implies that the active guest account is necessary unless
you want to provide a user/password each time you access the
machine.

Dave,

thanx for the reply.

So it seems to me it's better to have an account set up on each machine. I
only left it out because it's a home network between my wife's and my
computers.

Even though MS says that the guest account given access to the Shared
folder, it's not the case with me.

I have access from my PC to the Laptop but not from my Laptop to my PC. As
far as I can tell, both have the same settings, with SImple File Sharing
un-ticked.

Thanx again for your advice.

Deon
