Guest User Account

I have successfully set up a Guest account. However, each time I try to
access any Microsoft Office 2003 program, I get the installation wizard. I
have updated the wizard, uninstalled the Office program and reinstalled it --
as Administrator and as guest . . . to no avail.

I work at a church, and it would be nice to have a guest account so I can
keep my other files unviewable.

What EXACTLY do you mean by "I have successfully set up a *GUEST* account"?

Well, I've enabled the Guest Account. I am able to switch to it and it has
my microsoft program availble for use. But, when I click on Microsoft Word,
for example, the windows installer comes up EVERY TIME. That happens for all
my microsoft office 2003 programs.

Gordon,

You'll have to forgive my ignorance about posting, etc. I'm a novice at
this. Anyway, I didn't see your answer -- do you have any suggestions.

My guess is that this is by design. The Guest account does not use a user
profile of its own, and the Office Installer writes data to the user
profile. Since the account that is logging in does not have a user profile
that says "I've already had Office installed" the installer comes up each
time. It may be a better idea to create a limited-access user, disable
simple file sharing and use NTFS permissions to lock that user out of
folders you don't want them to be in.

The Guest account is a special purpose account for use on a network. Don't
use it for your purposes. There are security issues with using it..
Disable the guest account, then create another account with limited
privileges. Call it what you want such as Visitor, and use that.

Additionally, if you are still having problems with setup of Office 2003,
then post to an Office newsgroup. I suggest microsoft.office.public.setup

Thanks for the advice. Can you tell me how to disable the simple file
sharing and how to access the "NTFS Permissions"? I've not dealt with that
before. Thanks again.

Rock,

I am extremely ignorant on the posting of questions. When you say
microsoft.office.public.setup, is that what I would type in the advanced
section. Sorry for being so dumb about it all. Got to learn somewhere,
though!

He was referring to posting to that newsgroup instead of
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, where you are now.

To disable Simple File Sharing you'd open Windows Explorer and go to
Tools -> Folder Options, and click on the View tab. At the bottom of the
list is a box for "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". You'd clear that
check box to disable it.

Once disabled, you can right-click on a folder and select Properties, and
you will now see a Security tab. From here you can specify who can access
this folder. By default Everyone will have Full Control. You'd want to add
your account (or other accounts on the PC) to the permissions first, and
then remove Everyone. Once that is done anyone not explicitly defined in
the permissions will receive an Access Denied error if they try to open the
folder.

**HOWEVER**

1. If you currently are sharing files and such from this computer to other
machines on your network this will make that have to be reconfigured, as
your existing shares will be removed.
2. Your current configuration is called "simple file sharing" for a reason:
NTSF permissions can be tricky, and if you're not careful you can lock
yourself out of a folder.

Good advice Joe, A simpler technique if msguirt has xp home(unsure because
it was not stated) would be to make the folders private. If its xp home
there will be no security tabs to set up NTFS rules. Here is a link to help
you in making XP Home more secure(if that's what you are using).

Step 3 is the main step I am referring you to msguirt. Good Luck,

Joe

Forget about the "advanced section" and forget about the web site you are
using to get here ,which is actually a newsgroup, not a web site. The awful
web-based interface you are using is the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader,
such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See

I agree with Ken's suggestion to use a newsreader, however if you are going
to use the web access then just click on that newsgroup on the left side.
