If I click on some .mp3 files directly, the file will not open (Media
Player 10) telling me codec(s) are missing.

I open the file using GSpot v2.21 and Play (using associated player).
The file plays in Media Player 10.

I downloaded the XP codec package.

What do I need to do to have the file open directly?

Stop using media player. There is much better freeeware available-
media player classic
winamp
videolan

But if you want to use media player make sure you have mp3 checked under
file preferences and try reinstalling the program. Media player usually
opens mp3s without a problem.

some .mp3 files or every .mp3 file?

In case of only some files refuse to play you may check their
integrity and fix them.

To check: http://www.geocities.com/mp3utility/

To repair (without quality loss):

http://www.mptrim.com/ (free version is limited to files no longer
than seven minutes ans misses batch features)

http://www.willwap.co.uk/Programs/vbrfix.php

And yes, another player maybe is a good idea ;-)

Regards,
Thorsten
