Group Policy help on PST location

G

Guest

I am trying to set the default policy for PST files in group policies to a
NAS server. I open the policy and select default location for pst and I type
this in:

\\servername\home\%USERPROFILE%\archive.pst

The policy never creates the pst file. When I look at the outlook
autoarchive settings I can see the policy is applied because I can change the
number of days and see the change in outlook autoarchive properties.

I have even tried a simple folder change on c: and still cannot get the
default location changed.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong,

BTW the above server is already mapped by a login script for each user that
logs in.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure about this but MS recommends against storing PSTs on networks.
Maybe they're disallowing it automatically

If it is giving me an option to change the locations then I should be able to
change it to anything I want. The reason why I have to store it on a NAS
server is because these users log into different citrix terminals with
roaming profiles and need their archived mail to follow them.

Thanks Sue,

But this is just for the local policy. I would have to do this on every
machinge. I am using the outlk11.adm admin template and under misc their is
an option to set the pst location. This should override the default outlook
location.

Am I correct to assume this?

No, that assumption is not correct. As the article explains, the default location is not stored in the registry (which is what a policy setting would address) but as part of the user's mail profile, which cannot be set with policy except with the third-party Policy Maker tool.

Sue,

That makes some sense now after I reread the article. My only question is
the what is the pst location settin in outlk11.adm used for if it cannot be
used to set the location of the pst file.

The setting you are referring to is used to set the folder for most (but not all) .pst files that Outlook creates automatically. It does not affect the default archive file.

Note that Microsoft does not support network storage of .pst files.
