Grid background appears when composing e-mail.

Using latest version of Windows XP.......Subject "grid" sometimes appears
(for no apparent reason) and I can BARELY see what I am typing (words appear
in very pale yellow).

It sounds like you have default stationery defined. Change your mail format
to Plain Text and see if that makes a difference. Alternatively, remove
your stationery settings.
