Greyed out delete button

As part of my new job responsibilites I'm in charge of a data base set up in
Access 2000 that numerous employees use. I need to delete former employees,
but the delete button is greyed out. I'm sure the designer of this database
set it up this way to avoid accidental deletions, but he's long gone and
unreachable. How can I activate the delete button?
Thanks for your help.

Before you decide to "delete former employees", are you quite certain there
are no business needs for maintaining the historical records?

It sounds like you've settled on a solution ("delete former employees") but
have not described the problem. If you want folks here to offer their
informed suggestions, provide a bit more information...
