Grayed out preview button for event sounds in Control panel

I have been going nuts trying to resolve this problem. I noticed that my
event sounds no longer work. Also, Macromedia Flash 7 playes video but I get
no sound.
All my other music software works fine. I have Quicktime, Real Media, and
Windows Media Player all working fine.

When I go to the control panel and select the default sounds and try to
preview a sound, the "play" arrow is grayed out and nothing happens.
I thought that installation of SP2 was the problem, so I removed it and I
have the same problem. Any ideas???

I upgraded the sound drivers and reinstalled , but still grayed- out.

This has been the million dollar question for months now. Will post back
with some check points; however, in the meantime I would suggest checking
with MF7. Good luck and keep us posted.
