Graphics prog - "stitch" two photos together?

Years ago I had a graphics prog, which I can't remember the name of,
which allowed me two stitch two or more pics together to create a
panorama effect. I'm *fairly* sure the process was called stitching,
but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, this app is long gone and I've got
some pics I'd like to put together.

I wondered if there is a freeware graphics prog available now which
allows me to do this easily?

It's not a freeware, but I got "ArcSoft Panorama Maker" for free when I
bought my nikon 3100 digital camera. I didn't even know that I have it,
I accidentaly found it on cd's when I was looking for drivers or something.
If you have bought any camera, check your cd's that came with it :)

AutoStitch
http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

AutoStitch is the world's first fully automatic 2D image stitcher.
Capable of stitching full view panoramas without any user input
whatsoever, AutoStitch is a breakthrough technology for panoramic
photography, VR and visualisation applications.

AutoStitch is built using cutting edge research from the AI lab
at UBC, but it's incredibly simple to use! Just select a set of
photos, and AutoStitch does the rest: digital photos in,
panoramas out.

BTW.
IrfanView has a simple panorama option
Go to IrfanView's "Image" menu
and choose "Create panorama picture..."

Question for any AutoStitch users: Has anyone been able to use the program
regularly with success?
By that I mean used it more than a few times and it still does the job
(which by the way is really excellent when it works). I can't seem to get
it to do a stitch once it's been used. Perhaps this is just a demo and only
does one set or session?

No problem here except that it seems to use the same file name to save the
result every time - so it overwrites the last panorama it produced! Very
annoying until you remember to rename your stitched images at once.
