graphics problems

Have an hp laptop that I just replaced the monitor backlight thinking that
was the problem. Monitor still does work, but I can use by hooking up a
regular monitor to vga port. Problem now is that when I boot laptop I get
nothing on even the external monitor unless I choose to open in vga mode or
safe mode. Is this a problem with the video card? Any help would be
appreciated.
