Graphics fail when I'm on the net for more than 2 consecutive days

G

Guest

I am often on a graphics-intensive site on the internet. After 2 days, my
graphics start to fail, where I can see the outline of boxes and I can see
through them, not what is on them. In addition, part of my screen goes
white. I just purchased a new LCD monitor because I was advised that the
problem was with my monitor, not with my graphics card. The problem still
occurs with the LCD monitor.

In addition, when my graphics fail, very shortly after, my pc freezes up on
cyclical basis. . . 5 seconds my mouse is free, 15 seconds it's frozen. If
I close all but one program that I'm using, it sometimes will continue until
that one program that I'm working with is finished and I reboot, but most
times it crashes. I try to save my info asap and then reboot before it
crashes but sometimes I don't get the opportunity to do it. When I reboot,
everything works very well for 2 days again.

My pc specs:

Windows XP Pro, SP2
C Drive: 40G
RAM 256MB
AMD Duron Processor (v x86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping 1) (945 MHz)
Video Card: Radeon 8500 Series, driver ati2mtag.sys

My pc is not a name brand. Someone built it for me but he is no longer
available.

I would like to increase the amount of RAM that I have and get a new
graphics card. Are these items part of my motherboard or are they plugged
into it? If they are plugged into it, would you tell me what I should get?
Would it help if I reinstall the graphics card drivers? How would I do that
and where would I get the specific drivers for my video card? Please don't
give me a url for a site where I have to choose what I need because I don't
know what need. If you need additional info to advise me, please let me know.

256 mb on any board these days is running beyond its capability unless youre
disconnected from the web...Purchase more ram, youre pc will at the min
double its speed in every catagory.Simply unplug the pc,remove the ram, take
it to a pc shop to duplicate type.Go to the mb mfg web site or get the owners
manual from them and read the info for the board...ATI video cards all use
the
same downloads.

< min double its speed in every catagory.
Not true

read the responses on your other posts

Whatever apps you are using is not releasing memory, therefore at some point
you run out of memory and the sys freezes.
A reboot releases the memory
Using winxp, 512mb is a better memory size/option

Visit both the ATI site and download install the updated driver - read the
how to
and your mobo site, update chipset driver and possibly bios

Check to see the vidcard fan is working (and at
the proper speed).

Clean the crud out of the card heatsink/fan.

Check to see if your PSU has the power rating necessary
for the job. Check its fans as well.

Hell, check all your fans, CPU, PSU, all of 'em. One of them
may be stopping after this 2 day period.

Thank you for respondind DL. I'll going to buy more RAM, a 512mb.

I don't know how to "Visit the ATI site and download install the updated
driver - read the how to and your mobo site, update chipset driver and
possibly bios."

I'm assuming the ati site is the graphics card site but if I'm wrong, please
let me know. What is a mobo site? Where do I find the chipset driver and
bios? How do I update them?

Hi V, Thanks for responding.

I have a pc vacuum cleaner. The handheld part is about the size of a pen.
I never touch anything inside the pc with it, I stay about 1\2" to 1" away
and it sucks up the dust. I do this about every 6 months and it's pretty
clean inside my pc. When I brought it into Staples with me so that the
person there could see the type of firewire card I needed (he and his father
work on pc's), he told me that it was the cleanest used pc he'd every seen,
lol, so I've eliminated the possibility that dust, etc, could be bogging
things down. It's very good advice, though.

This url refuses to open for me. The page never finishes downloading and the
bottom left of the screen where it tells where the page is at at the time
(downloading, done, etc) just keep blinking.

I was just reviewing what you had written and the first time I read it, I
missed that you had also said to check to see of the PSU has the power rating
necessary for the job. How do I do that and what do I compare it against?
(sorry but please give your directions step by step)

The mgfr of your video card should have some suggestions
for PSU ratings. If not on the manual on the CD that came with it,
on their website.

Unfortunately, again, I don't have the CD or the manual that came with the
video card and I can't access the website . . . the page won't open :(

Hi DL,

It took a very long time as you said, but the page opened but many of the
links at the site wouldn't open, even after waiting an hour. Also I couldn't
find anything named Beleric Advisor. I typed Beleric in the site search box
and there were no results. Would you give me the exact url where Beleric
Advisor can be found please?

Hi DL, Sorry about the duplicate posts above.

I also ran a Crucial System Scan and these are the results:

It also said:

"Important: Your system can accept two different types of memory technology.
However, you can use only one memory type at one time. You must either
upgrade with the same type of memory you currently have or remove all the
current memory before installing another type."

It then listed these:

My questions: Can I choose any one of the above or are some not compatible
with my pc as stated in the "Important" message stated above? I don’t know
the difference between the first set and the second set of RAM that is
available or if I need to choose a RAM from the first set or the second set?

It looks like I have one 256M of RAM according to the Belarc Scan results
and it’s located in Slot 0. The results of the Belarc Scan show that I have
3 more RAM slots available but the Crucial Scan shows that I have only 2 RAM
slots and it doesn't know if one of them is available. How can I determine
what I have? Since I have 1 256M of RAM, I’ll be buying another 256M of RAM,
but I don’t know which one to choose.

I've given you so much info that I received and I'm sorry for the
overabundance of it but I didn't know what info I needed to look for in the
scan results to determine the RAM and graphics card that I need and I didn't
know what info you would need to advise me, so I gave you all of it.

Much thanks in advance (if you decide to tackle this project):

Beleric lists your mobo as ECS K7S5
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downlo...r&DetailDESC=K7S5A Pro(5.0)&MenuID=35&LanID=0
or if you prefer
http://tinyurl.com/z84tt
However no chipset drivers are listed, the only one that may help you is the
SIS agp driver.

You might want to try the ATI site again, perhaps the site had a problem,
I've just check and its ok

Your sys could certainly do with uping ram to at least 512mb

HartsVideo said:
I just Googled Belarec and found Belarc Advisor and ran the program. It gave
me the specifics of my pc. However, there's no mention of mobo. I copied
and pasted the results of the summary that Belarc Advisor created:

I tried ATI again . . . I even registered, but I can't sign in. The sign-in
page goes no further. When I went in thru a back door, I looked up Radeon
8500, which is the graphics card that I have. The site addresses gaming
using Radeon 8500 and nothing else.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
