graphics card not in dedicated slot

I am building a new PC and in error purchased a PCI graphics card for a
motherboard that has a PCI x16 graphics card slot. Return postage and
the restocking fee involved will eat up almost 1/3 of the cost after rebate.
So my question is can I install the PCI card in an available PCI slot or
does a graphics card have to be in the intended graphics card slot?

If the card is truly a PCI card then it will work in a standard PCI slot.

Did you buy the PCI card because you actually low-end performance? If
all you are doing is navigating around the desktop and word
processing, and because 2D acceleration hasn't improved much over many
years, the PCI card will be sufficient for those needs. If you bought
the PCI video card to also play games, you went backwards for
performance.

Check the BIOS. It might have a video controller setting to specify
where first to look for a video card. It might have a selection for a
particular slot and/or type.

Your card is a PCIe [express} card and will not fit in a
standard PCI slot. You might be able to sell it but you
are probably stuck with the restocking fee. Consider it a
lesson in reading specifications and on-line ordering.
Always check restocking fees. Since the part is now used,
even if you didn't even open the box yet, the dealer is not
allowed by federal law to sell it at full retail. A
restocking fee is essential for the dealer to make a profit
so he can stay in business and provide you service.
