PCI and PCIe slots are different and not interchangeable.
So you're correct.

Check the specs for your mobo [ on-line or in the manual]
that applies to your exact mobo.

Graphics cards would normally go in an AGP slot on mobo
built prior to the introduction of the PCIe cards. The PCIe
16x slot is used for graphics to give the highest speed.

There are standard PCI graphics cards for those who want to
install a second graphics card or whose mobo lacks an AGP
slot.

Thanks to you both. Looks like I will be putting off the 'upgrade?' to vista
'til I get a new mb, CPU, memory, graphics card. I did temporarily put vista
on this machine but without the glass and 3d etc. it wasn't worth all the
hassle. So back to XP (It's like coming home!)
