Grandfathered Hotmail accts - will they work with WM?

Guest

I subscribed to Hotmail shortly after it was launched and much before
Microsoft bought the company. I understood that accounts dating from that
period would continue to be supported through an email client. I saw one
reference to the fact that these accounts are "grandfathered" for WM access,
but can't seem to get it to work.
If so, what do I need to do to get this working?
Seriously annoying if that isn't the case. My upgrade will effectively be a
massive downgrade as I'll have lost a core utility I had with XP, for an
interface that otherwise just looks pretty.

I've had my Hotmail account for about 7yrs now (Presumably old enough to
also be grandfathered). It's still not supported. I haven't heard of anyone
who can get it to work with Windows Mail. It's a real PIA. I am trying to
get everyone to switch over to my gmail account but honestly, why should I?
Hotmail is MS's baby, why isn't it supported by THEIR mail software?

HTTP mail does not work with Windows Mail.
You can use MS Outlook if you happen to have
a copy.

Here's an article on it:

When you say you can't get it to work, what are the symptoms?
Are you using the POP server as opposed to the HTTP server?
Windows Mail does not support any HTTP server, regardless of
grandfather status.

Hotmail is http based, not pop that is why it won't work. As soon as you try
to configure it, it kicks it back saying it's no longer supported. Very
irritating.

There's a link on the page that shows you how to configure your account to
access it. I found that I had to put something OTHER than a hotmail account
to get it proceed. (it will try and tell you it is not supoorted if you
enter an actual @hotmail.com addy etc) ie. (e-mail address removed) then
when you have completed the steps, go back into the properties and edit the
email addy so that it shows your true hotmail addy.

I have it working and the folders are not downloading my end although I
think you can set it up that way from what I remember. It says it is a free
trial and then you have to purchase after 100 downloaded emails.

Thanks Mikey for the heads up on this.

Gary...well kind of...see my post about the anomaly of grandfathered or fee based http **msn.com** accounts that are hotmail accounts but with an msn.com address that apparently function for some in OE and WM with the live.com settings for pop3 legacy msn.com accounts.

Why ? Not much data is available to ascertain, though it could be due to the account being a prior pop3 legacy account that was converted to http with an MSn Explorer install or a prior pop3 legacy account that was cancelled and converted to a premium http account.

I've three msn.com accounts. One pop3 legacy(works in WM fine as it should), one msn.com that was a prior pop3 converted to http with MSn Explorer 6 then cancelled and switched to a premium(works fine with the current pop3 legacy live.com settings in Vista, it also works in XP with OE for both pop3 and http servers), a third msn.com that is a premium without a prior pop3 history(does not work with pop3 legacy settings in Vista or XP)..
- Note: The first two accounts were created in 1995 the other prior to MSn Explorer being fully bundled with MSn Internet Access(MSn Explorer through version 7 could be installed without a contract for dialup or broadband access)

Imo, I think this is an anomaly rather than msn/msft intent and should not be construed in all cases as a change in msft policy on hotmail pop usage for grandfathered/valued accounts.
