Google Timing Out

Hi All --

I am experiencing some strange behavior wherein www.google.com always
times out on my laptop. This occurs in both Firefox 2 and IE7. Some
Google sites (e.g., images.google.com, www.gmail.com) work fine
whereas others do not (e.g., news.google.com, www.google.com). I know
that the issue isn't with Google because if I use my laptop and
desktop side by side, I can access Google on the desktop and the
laptop times out.

I am a cautious computer user and in my 15 years of computer use have
never had a virus, but this smells an awful lot like one. A full scan
with Symantec (latest definition files) doesn't turn up anything. I
looked at my HOSTS file and nothing seemed amiss. I can't find any
references to this problem anywhere on the Internet.

What does timing out mean?

Do you get an error message?

IE closes?

Your machine burst into flames?

Or what?

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Specifically, in Firefox 2.0.0.2, I get the "The server is taking too
long to respond" error page. In IE7, I get the comparable error
message, although I can't remember what that is now (I don't use IE7).

Does this happen on any other network, or any other machines on your
network?

That is, if it behaves this way at home, take the laptop somewhere else,
preferably with a different ISP and connect. If the problem is fixed, it's
not your laptop.
