When was the last time you cleaned out your temp files, web history, etc.?

If you don't have it already, get Crap Cleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/

Probably never :)
problem solvered, he had somehow turned on "work offline" :(
prior to that, I ran spybot (250 problems) and adaware
Things look reasonable now.
Thanks for responding, I had read advice elsewhere crapcleaner was suspect.

You should do it regularly.

Crap Cleaner is great. I've been using it now for over two years. It
finds temp files that XP never finds. It will also not nuke cookies that
you don't want nuked for log on purposes, etc. I would refrain from
using the Issues feature unless you're having a problem with the
registry, however.

Well I do,
its the "he who never makes his bed 13yo" at fault here.
He wants to do afresh install now of XP
and install my XP gadgets bar.

It's probably good for him to learn the hard way, I told him
about risks with P2P and now he is at the receiving end.
I'll suggest he load crap cleaner, I cannot see much harm
when taken in context what he shall probably receive anyhows.
Cheers

If he's into P2P, get him to install Ubuntu which is bulletproof
compared to XP in regards to viruses and malware. All he needs is a
router with a hard firewall. Check it out at www.ubuntu.com and I would
wait for the new version coming out in a few days.

It's free and comes with access to over 23,000 free programs including
aMule (Ubuntu version of eMule), bit torrent and all the other things
your kid would love.

Thanks,
I'll drag one of the half dozen or so Pentium 4's I have in the garage,
and have him load it on one of those.
I'll be interested to see what it looks like.

Choose one with an nVidia card, preferably at 256MB so he can get all
the fancy visual effects of Compiz, including turning the desktop into a
cube you can turn around and have four different desktops. Here's an
example of a computer running Compiz with Ubuntu:
