I hear people saying they can check to see if the grass needs cutting at
their vacation home a world away.
I thought these images one gets on google earth are old images that can be
up to three years old and the viewer has no way of knowing when the images
were taken.

most of them are static shots taken a long time ago, but there is an effort
to get dynamic video from various points, I recently read a news article
about this.
I think it was on Yahoo news a few weeks ago.

This summer, we had problems with our pool filtration system and no
money in the budget to fix it. The current picture of our house on
Google Earth shows our 'green' pool. :(

You need to use the DigitalGlobe Coverage layer to find the dates of the
images.
