Google and Altavista keeps search history

Can anyone tell me why these search websites keep a
running list of every key word I have searched for? Is
there a setting in IE that disables this? Clearing the
cache and history doesn't help.

Disable your Auto complete feature. If you want to eliminate words from the
drop down search box just highlight the word and press the DEL key.
