Goodbye ATI

H

HockeyTownUSA

I have stuck with ATI for my last three video cards (Rage3D, Radeon 9700
Pro, X800 XT Platinum). It may sound silly but I am going with nVidia for my
PCI-Express card for two reasons:

(1) It has a powerful single slot design (7900GT)
(2) It consumes less power and generates less heat

Unless anyone knows of a top end card (that outperforms the 7900GT) that
runs as a single slot, I'm forced to move on to nVidia. I need the single
slot because I run a small form factor PC and it has limited internal space,
so no room for the fat card.

Good bye ATI... (sniff sniff)

The management of ATI will now commit seppuku over the loss
of your business.

Will a 7900GT fit in a SFF PC?

I've got a 7800GTX, and it's a large card. It's not "fat" (it has a
single-slot cooler), but it is both long and tall. If I wanted to use a
third-party passive chipset cooler on my Asus A8N-SLI, the card would
interfere with it for either PCI-E slot.

You may wish to check length and height limits before ordering the $300
card.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I have been hopping back and forth from ATI to nvidia and back, and have
always been happy with both. Last card was a x800xt AGP, now using a
7800GTX PCI-e, haven't had any issues with either of them. The 7800GTX
is huge though, but the standard cooler is very silent. I don't think
you make a mistake by choosing one or the other anyway.

I just discovered I could use modified NVIDIA drivers on my old toshiba
laptop, which has a GF4 440Go GPU. Changing from 28.46 drivers provided
by toshiba to 78.21 drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com, the increase in
performance and quality was huge. See alt.comp.periphs.videocards.nvidia.

However if ATI comes out with something better than the current
generation of cards soon, no doubt that I'll change again.

oh.. okay.. goodbye.

hey! you know whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy nvideo produce less heat ?????

well i'll tell you. Cause they run a little while - then they crash. You
have to turn off you PC then back on and reboot.
he - overall effect - less heat. What the heck huh - you don't have to
worry about you PC games anymore you won't be able to play them long enough
to determine IF you are winning or losing huh.

you'll be back.... heh

Hope this helps,

You went from a 3D Rage to a Radeon 9700 Pro? What happened in the decade
between the two cards? :)

Seriously, though, it's a commonly accepted fact that SFF cases are limited
in expandability, compared to full-sized ATX cases. Restricted video card
selection is just a tradeoff for a small box. How beefy is the PSU in your
case?

I know...ATI video cards are crap!

PSU is 250W. But keep in mind that it has good 12V rails. These things are
designed with the power gamer in mind too, so anything you can put in it, it
will run. My current rig has 240W PSU running:

AMD Opteron 175 (Dual Core 2.2GHz - like 4400+)
ATI X800 XT Platinum AGP
150GB Raptor 10,000RPM SATA
2x1024MB OCZ Platinum DDR400 (PC3200)
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
Lite-On DVD/CD-RW

My next upgrade is going to be going back to Nvidia as well.. please let us know
the difference once you purchase one. My reason isn't for size problems however.

I have a Xtasy X850 XT PE currently.

I've had good experiences with both. I'll buy the one that gives me the
most bang for the buck in my price range, probably the one that's on sale...

You know to be honest, my next upgrade will definately be with Nvidi
also. Personally I've had it with ATI and their bullsh*t. Horribl
written drivers, sloppy, mediocre software and best of all, problem
which were never there suddenly appear. Atleast Nvidia has the commo
sense to take customer complaints into consideration and actuall
"fix" or "repair" issues that previous version o
drivers had before them. Ontop of that, ATI just can't dish it ou
like Nvidia in my opinion.. the point is both cards really shine whe
it comes to higher resolutions, but even still Nvidia always pull
ahead for some reason

You gotta be one of them thar Nvida shills they seed into forums and
newsgroups like this one. ATI puts out new drivers every month. I've
read of problems with Nvidia drivers, I don't think they are any
better than ATI in that department. Saying ATI drivers are crap is so
old school. Only the hardware matters now.

Listen buddy, I'm not here to start some sort of childish flamewar
I'm talking from experience. I currentl
own TWO products from ATI and subject to how great they truly are
they're being held back by "sloppy written" software AN
drivers. You can claim that I'm some sort of representativ
undercover from Nvidia all you want, but the truth of the matter i
ATI is seriously lacking in the software department. Can you explai
to me why I was forced to use CAT 5.11 when 5.12 and 5.13 were out?
had to wait for the release of 6.1, and even still they weren'
perfect. Using 5.12 or 5.13 resulted in my system constanly lockin
up. For God sakes, Control Centre wouldn't even open! I have plent
of respect for ATI, because truthfully speaking their products an
ingenuity surpass Nvidia by far, but what's the point when thei
software is holding back your hardware

Oh SURE they do. Just like they still support the old AIW Pro for Windows
98SE.
Doesn't work worth a damn. They obsolete their drivers and when they come
out with newer cards they don't fully support them in the new operating
systems.
Example XP Pro x64 is not well supported and has very bad drivers. Plus
their idea of support is when you buy a card from them with bad dongle
screws is for YOU to buy a new $45 dongle via Fed Ex delivery and YOU have
to go down and sign for the damn thing rather than have Fed Ex just leave it
at your office.
Sorry, that's not what I call good support.
I want better treatment. If I buy a card and THEY screw up, like they did
buy not threading the attachment nut fully, then they should replace the
dongle bolt that gets chewed up because of a defect they did. I should not
have to send my card all over the country to get a replacement for the nut
on the back of my card.
They could have sent one. As it is, I just tapped out the threads. But
they would not send a replacement for the custom bolt.
Pikers!
Not only that, they don't have the media drivers for 64 bit windows XP Pro,
or will not release them. That sucks hard.
Not exactly would you would call a good OOBE.
They have done this time and time again with various clients.
I'm not giving them another chance.

and yeah, goody goody if they off themselves. Jerks.
If ya sell it, ya should support it for what it's advertised to do,
otherwise Don't Sell it for the purposes listed on the damn box. QED.

Saying ATI drivers are crap is a fact. Just shows that the "Old School"
knows what the hell they are talking about.
Programmers of any salt always say the hardware hardly matters.... that they
can write software to do whatever they want.
Hardware solutions are the oldest school out there. As old as early 80's
Radio Rat Shack days.
Since there are only 2 schools, per se, then that makes you obsolete... and
I don't care if you're fresh out of Schule.
Ya been learnin from Dinosaurs, dear friend... and fossilized ones at that.

G

Graystar

Damn straight. I don't care about the nVidia issues at all. That's not why
I bought the ATI AIW.
I'm just tired of the mis-representation of the products they sell and how
crappy their support actually is.
It's just "we don't have drivers for that" and you fall off the edge of the
earth AFA they are concerned.
Again, sucky OOBE.

an XP Pro x64, AMD Athlon 64 modder.
If I wasn't building & modifying geigercounters, I'd write my own damn
drivers.
As it is, I have better things to do, so they can kiss my shiney metal ass.

Speaking about fault on their part. Last week Wednesday I believe,
went out and purchased an ATI TV Wonder Elite. Great card right
Right.. horrible software? RIGHT! None the less, when I opened th
f*cking box, everything looked like it was just throwned in there an
kicked onto the truck for delivery. The card itself was full o
fingerprints on one side, and totally clean on the other, wtf? Onto
of that, I couldn't even fit the damn thing into my PCI slo
because.. guess what... the f*cking bracket was crooked! So I had t
unscrew the bracket off and reshape it so that I would be able to fi
it back into my computer. Just beautiful, I love it. Oh, oh.. I als
forgot to mention that the CD was corrupted. The second you put th
CD in, your drive starts to spin wildly out of control, litterall
shaving about 3 months off the life of your motor from the 30 second
it was in there. Seriously, like what the hell. I CAN'T schedule an
recordings, CAN'T turn off that blasted TV ON DEMAND, and I CAN'
seem to understand why I keep getting the same messages prompting m
to do things that I've already told it to do! F*cking ATI.
seriously
