Going nuts with Excell security

I am running Excell 2002/SP3 on a machine using Vista Home. Every time I try
to do something the Global worksheet protection utility tells me I have an
error. I have looked at "Tools/Protection" in the pulldown menu and find
there is NO WAY to turn protection OFF.
How do I tell Excell I don't need protection?
PS - I tried Office 2007 and I HATE it!

Nothing to do with Windows XP - best to ask the experts in an Excel
newsgroup.
