going into standby mode

Prior to installing screensavers, my Compaq Presario used to go into standby
mode after a few minutes of inactivity. Now, despite having removed the
screensaver, I am not able to get it into standby mode. Please help.

Humm, you may want to check for and remove any malware you installed
with the "screensavers". Adaware SE and Spybot S&D are a couple free one
that work well.
