I have a computer that has windows xp and I would like to
go back to windows 2000 because of some program issues
with diferent softwares that we are running. I have tried
to re-install windows from a cd and it keeps coming up
with an error and it does not allow me to continue with
the new reformating and installation of windows.

What you describe trying to do should work. To get help here, provide
details of exactly how you tried it, and exactly what error message(s)
you received. Generalities are content-free.

There is no means to downgrade. To do a clean install, either boot the
Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks
can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk
directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe
(from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

If nothing else works, boot off a Win98 DOS floppy and
run FDISK. Delete your disk partitions and then run Win2000
setup.

Note: This will clear *everything* from your hard drive.
Make a backup beforehand if you want to save any data.

If you have a Sony computer, some models have a system
bios that requires WinXP; it will not allow the installation of
any other operating system. Sony released an updated
system bios to fix this issue, it's available on their website.

Are you BOOTING from the CD? If you have WindowsXP running and then try
from the CD, it's not going to work.

Greetings --

There is no "rollback" to Win2K.

If you want to replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you're certainly
entitled to do so, as long as you've purchased a legitimate copy of
that earlier OS. (Although I can't imagine why you'd want to.)

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and/or format the system partition as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
