Deciding on a clean install of WinXPHomeSP2 (upgrade) on a disk with
Win98SE, and using a Win98SE boot diskette, I partitioned the drive using
FDISK and then formatted it.
However, when I tried to boot from the HDD, amazingly, the GoBack opening
DOS screen appeared and started looping endlessly so that I can't access the
CD-ROM drive. I thought partitioning and formatting got rid of everything,
so where is this GoBack coming from.

Unfortunately, I can't boot from the CD-ROM. If I boot from the Win98
diskette with CD-ROM support and try to run "setup.exe" I am told that file
cannot be run from DOS

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A normal FDISK more than likely will not remove files that were embedded
in the boot sector.........Either a quick 0 disk option will do it using
the Harddrives manufacturer disk or follow these instructions from this
page..........Bear in mind that you do not have the OS installed anymore
but I believe this option should still work.......Personally I'd wipe
the drive clean..........

Situation:

When you start your computer, GoBack no longer launches correctly. You
may also be unable to access your hard drive. This document describes
how to resolve the problem by removing changes made by GoBack.

Solution:
Damage or changes to a computer's boot record may prevent access to the
hard drive, causing the computer to stop responding or preventing access
to information. By design, GoBack works with the boot record to provide
system restoration capability. To troubleshoot problems with the boot
record, you may want to remove the changes that GoBack has made.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
Notes:
The following instructions require a computer that can successfully
start Windows 98/Me in order to create a Windows Startup disk. This
computer does not have to be the computer you are trying to remove
GoBack changes from.
Gb_prog.exe is located in the GoBack installation folder (C:\Program
Files\GoBack is the default location). Gb_prog.exe can also be found on
the Norton SystemWorks CD in the \Support\GBTools folder.
Gb_prog.exe may also be download from the Symantec FTP site. Click
GB_Prog.exe to download the file.
If you have Norton SystemWorks 2002, follow the instructions in the
document How to extract the Gb_prog.exe file from the Norton SystemWorks
2002 CD to extract the Gb_prog.exe file.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

To remove the changes that GoBack made to the boot record
Create a Windows Startup disk under Windows 98/Me. For more information,
see the document How to create a Windows Startup disk.
Copy the Gb_prog.exe file to the Windows Startup disk. If there is not
enough room to copy Gb_prog.exe to the Windows Startup disk, then copy
Gb_prog.exe to a separate floppy disk.
On the computer that you want to remove the GoBack changes from, insert
the Windows Startup disk and then start the computer. The computer has
finished starting when you see an A:\> prompt and a blinking cursor.
Insert the disk that has the Gb_prog.exe file.
Type gb_prog.exe /u and then press Enter.

The utility removes the changes that GoBack made to the boot sector and
the partition table and further troubleshooting can proceed. If this
method does not successfully remove GoBack from the boot record, then
see the document Cannot start Windows after installing GoBack.

You don't run setup in the root directory of the CD. At the DOS prompt, enter X:\I386\WINNT.EXE to start the "DOS" based portion of XP's setup.

As for removing GoBack, formatting the drive doesn't necessarily overwrite the boot sector. You can use the /SYS switch when you format with the Win98 diskette (FORMAT C: /SYS) or just wait. XP's install will overwrite it anyway.

You have to remove GoBack from the MBR. Use the Win98 setup floppy.

Type: fdisk /mbr

This will clear it out for you. Then you can install your operating system.

You would have done better to remove GoBack using it's process for doing so.
I can't recall the exact key press but if you read the documentation that
came with your copy of GoBack it should be listed. Once you remove GoBack
you should be able to repartition, format and install XP. Why you are using
FDISK is interesting and likely part of the problem. I'd suggest you use the
DISKPART app that is part of the XP Recovery Console. To learn how to use it
take this link http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm and look at How
To Partition
