Go from Vista to XP Pro...?

I have a client that ordered a PC for his business and was told by HP
business that he could only get it with Vista. Before calling me he
went ahead and ordered it and then bought a copy of XP Pro to put on
when it arrives. The problem is he ordered it with Office
preinstalled.

So, now can I "upgrade" to XP Pro and preserve office or do I have to
wipe the drive, install XP and then find a way to reinstall Office
from the disks? I assume when I walk in there tonight I'm going to be
confronted with a box that has Vista (business?) on it and a bunch of
recovery disks.

What the hell is with HP anyway, telling customers they can't get XP
anymore?

Before you wipe the drive... download (free) Belarc Advisor and "save" its
display. (html)
You will then have a record of various license codes and a lot more.
If you can then lay your hands on the office media you can install it on XP
with the paid for license.
Down the road you could then reinstall Vista with the saved license. You
would just need the Vista OEM install media.

Still wouldn't mind living in the US though.

The USA is like a whore: looks great from afar but when you get too
close ... trust me, as an American, living in Europe is far more civilized.

No. I've never heard of any operating system that supports downgrades.

Yes.

I'm thinking that if your client had ordered a business-class machine
instead of a consumer-grade model, he'd have been offered greater
flexibility. I suspect he went for the lower cost of the consumer-grade
machine.

I should have been clearer. HP told him he was welcome to install XP
when he got it, so the warranty is fine.

I hope he got that in writing; it'll be a first.

Software Emperor is different from Emperor of the US. Microsoft's riches,
and Bill Gates fortune is dictated by how many of us buy Vista and Office

You know what they say about NY, don't you? Great place to visit but I'd
hate to live there.

For all the problems this country has- so many still
want to come live here, even die trying to get here.
It is the main reason why this country continues to
grow at an astonishing rate. Many European countries
are growing so slowly or even shrinking, that a social
implosion is not far off. How long before some European
countries collapse under the weight of social welfare without
the ability to replace young workers? France is even paying
couples to have babies. They now have a better birth rate.
But, other European countries aren't so lucky. Of course, the
falling birth rates across Europe have presented another problem
for some when combined with the massive immigration of Muslims-
the reshaping of many communities throughout Europe.
All the utopian ideals you seem to think emanate from Europe,
will mean nothing if nobody is there but a bunch of grayed haired
retired folks sitting around wondering where have all the children
gone. Especially, if most of children that are around, are being taught
Sharia law.

You can call it alarmist, whatever you want. Crunch the numbers, look
at the birth rates, and then see where the majority of immigration is coming
from. The EU have done their own studies, the details are out there. It's not
a pretty picture if things stay the same. Deep down, I think you know that.

The US has a healthy birth rate and a never ending supply of people wanting
to come here. Even though immigration is a hot topic in this country, and
the US does need to control it a bit better, I would take growth any day over
slowly withering away.

Dan is 100 percent right here. Changing anything in the title of the
thread, will cause the thread to be considered a New thread in most
any newsreader. And that is a total disruption of a thread.

It is just plain ignorant and stupid to change the title of the
thread.

Would you please learn how to post in a newsgroup. Quit changing the
titles of the threads! It causes most newsreaders to consider the
thread an entire new subject. If you are going to post a new subject
then do so. If you are going to reply to a thread then reply to the
thread. Dont change the title of the thread.

Um, the EU has immigration from Eastern Europe, Latin America, the
Orient, the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Africa. There
are over four million immigrants in Spain alone. The reason these people
want to emigrate is not because they want to live in Europe or the USA
but because they want to EAT. Ask any recent Mexican arrival if he or
she would rather live in Mexico with a decent job or the USA with a
decent job and the answer will always be "Mexico". Take a trip to South
Central LA and tell me how "American" that is. I hope you speak Spanish
because no one there speaks English.

Of course, your response is the typical response that USA denizens give:
"We are the greatest county in the world". Well, you're not and I lived
there for over 30 years in Colorado, Texas, Connecticut, Chicago, D.C,
Virginia, California and Maryland so I know a few things about the
country where I was born and I can tell you that I don't miss the USA
and have no plans to even visit, much less live there.

My best friend and his family are from Colombia... I made numerous trips
with him to Miami when he was fighting deportation, and then again to gain
US citizenship.

My mother's grandparents were from Peru. You don't know me, you don't
have a clue.... only assumptions.

You are so predictable. I never said "We are the greatest county in the world".
Oh, it's *country* not "county".
When did you become so jaded and bitter?

We (the US) aren't any more special than other people on this planet...
my blood is the same color as yours. I bet you laugh, cry, and feel pain
just as I do.

Enjoy Spain. It is a beautiful country filled with wonderful people.

Take care,

Michael
