The opening page of ShellCity currently has links to three Gmail apps:

GTRAY.......... GTray will open a browser window and log you directly
into your specified Gmail account.....(free).....GO THERE!

PGTGM..........Download gmail emails through any email client. Sits
between you GMail account and your email client, converting messages
from the web based mailbox into POP3 messages that a program such as
Outlook Express or Firebird can understand.....(free).....GO THERE!

G-MAILTO..........G-Mailto is a utility that automatically associates
mailto email links on the web with GMail. So clicking an email link
will open up the GMail compose window instead of opening up something
like Outlook Express .....(free).....GO THERE!

I've not tried them.

How are you people using GMail? The website tells me it is not
available for public use yet. I haven't even been able to sign up for
an account.

You must receive an invitation from people that are in the beta test
